| About Tae Kwon Do: |
| Tae Kwon Do (also spelled taekwondo) is one of the most widely practiced martial arts in the United States. Loosely translated as the way of hand and foot, Tae Kwon Do is perhaps best known for its balanced use of both upper and lower body techniques. This mixed emphasis helps students of this Korean martial art develop strength, speed, balance, flexibility, and stamina. |
|
| In addition to physical disciple, Tae Kwon Do also emphasizes mental discipline through what are frequently called the Tenets of Tae Kwon Do: |
| | Courtesy: To be thoughtful and considerate of others. Tae Kwon Do practitioners, both students and instructors, should be polite, and show consideration for others. |
| | Integrity: Integrity describes the honest, moral, and ethical manner in which you should interact with others, thereby earning respect and trust. |
| | Perseverance: This basically stands for your internal drive. Challenges allow us to improve ourselves and therefore should not be avoided. |
| | Self Control: To have control of your body and mind. A Tae Kwon Do student should practice controlling his actions and reactions. |
| | Indomitable Spirit: To have courage in the face of adversity. A Tae Kwon Do student should never be dominated by, or have his spirit broken by another. |
|
| Common displays of the union of physical and mental discipline are the breaking of boards, the performance of forms of increasing difficulty, and sparring. Successful completion of these tasks requires physical mastery of techniques and highly focused concentration. |
